When we think of Human Resources and Marketing, we usually think of two distinct departments within a company, one focused on external matters, one focused on internal matters. But more and more these two departments are working together.

Companies tend to think of HR and marketing as separate entities and working in parallel. But in reality, the two functions share more similarities than an organization would expect. HR and marketing roles intertwine in many ways, making the two departments an ideal match for several successful collaborations.

While the marketing department communicates the brand of the company to consumers, the collaboration of HR and marketing communicates the brand of the company to employees.

Each team has the function to attract, educate, and retain both the interests and attention of today’s talent market. While their target personas and “product” or “service” are different, their implementation, execution, and desired outcomes of respective activities are actually closely related.

HR and marketing both work everyday to improve the outer opinions and internal satisfaction of employees, utilising key information and marketing strategies to support the business.

There are many benefits gained by the Marketing department and HR department when working together.

  1. Keeps the employer brand and coorperate brand consistent.
  2. HR finds the best people to promote and build the brand, while marketing creates and delivers the brand message to employees so they work hand-in-hand.
  3. Builds an environment where both departments respect each others’ efforts and contributions.

There are some disadvantages as the two departments work together.

  1. Conflicts may arise and due to that the business processes may slow down.
  2. It may cause biases between the two departments.

Both HR and Marketing must communicate clear messages to important audiences. HR focuses on the internal audience, or employees, while Marketing focuses on external stakeholders like clients, media, and competitors.
