Unlike a flood or a tornado, the virus doesn’t hit once and go away. It lingers, leaving business leaders and employees uncertain about their next steps. The coronavirus pandemic has disrupted organizations and caused human resource managers to think differently about their role as they adjust to social distancing practices and a new work environment that they may never have imagined. As face-to-face collaboration is replaced with e-mail and videoconferencing, HR managers have to do difficult work under difficult circumstances.

Not only are HR professionals concerned about employees’ health and well-being during the pandemic, they are also under the strain of processing the paperwork and providing solace to the millions of workers who have been laid off or furloughed. For employees still on the job, HR managers are trying to keep their workers productive, motivated, engaged and connected — all factors that are moving targets in the new normal.

Even before the coronavirus pushed remote work to its limits, virtual work was on the rise. The number of people telecommuting in the U.S. increased 159 percent between 2005 and 2017, according to data from Flexjobs. The data also shows that 4.7 million people in the U.S. currently telecommute, up from 3.9 million in 2015.

What percentage of jobs are remote? In the United states the labour force reached a high of 164.6 million people working in February 2020 just before the Pandemic got into full swing. Statistics on remote workers reveal that more than 4.7 million people work remotely at least half the time in the United States.

HR managers’ number one job right now is to keep people up-to-date, be reassuring and build trust,” Rowan said.
